Sun., Sept. 19, 10:00 a.m. -- Water Communion Sunday.
Water Communion, like Flower Communion, is a unique Unitarian Universalist tradition. Since the 1980s, many UU congregations have held a Water Communion once a year, often as a gathering ritual at the start of a new “church year”. What is the ritual? You are asked to bring a small quantity of water with you on the 19th. The water will ideally be from a place that is dear and special to you. Perhaps the water will be from a place you spent a great deal of time over the summer, like a stream in a park you walked in, or water from a swimming pool you frequented. Perhaps the water will be from a place you traveled to over the summer, if you had the presence of mind to collect water while you were there! Perhaps the water will be from the tap of your own home. During the service on the 19th, I will invite you to pour your water into a bowl, one at a time, and share why the water is special or representative of your summer. As the UUA website puts it, “The combined water is symbolic of our shared faith coming from many different sources.” Come and join us! It will be wonderful to be together again.
